Athan Achonu is a former Nigerian senator and indigene of Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State. He was born on November 10, 1971, and spent his early years in the community where he was raised by his parents.
Athan Achonu obtained his early education at the Maria Assumpta Primary School in Owerri, Imo state, and later attended the Government Secondary School in the same city where he obtained his secondary school leaving certificate.
He enrolled at the University of Uyo, where he studied and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Accounting in 1995.
After his graduation, Athan Achonu worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria as a senior accountant before resigning to venture into politics. He joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003 and began his political career as a ward councilor in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.
In 2011, Athan Achonu was elected to represent the people of Imo North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During his time in the Senate, he served on various committees, including the Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, and the Committee on Special Duties.
He challenged the election outcome in court, citing irregularities and electoral malpractices, but his case was dismissed by the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

In 2019, Athan Achonu once again contested for the Senate seat in Imo North Senatorial District, this time under the platform of the Accord Party.
