Lauren Wasser is an extraordinary individual whose life journey has been marked by resilience, courage, and advocacy. However, Lauren’s path to success was far from conventional, as she faced a life-altering challenge at the age of 24 when she contracted toxic shock syndrome.
The harrowing experience led to the amputation of both her legs, but instead of succumbing to despair, Lauren turned her adversity into a platform for advocacy.
Her story is an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of using one’s voice to make a positive impact on the world.
What Happened to Lauren Wasser?
In a deeply distressing and life-changing turn of events, Lauren Wasser’s life took a devastating turn when she was only 24 years old.
It was October 3, 2012, when she unknowingly contracted toxic shock syndrome while using a tampon during her period. As the day progressed, she started feeling unwell, experiencing symptoms that resembled flu-like conditions.
Her condition worsened when her friends at the Darkroom on Melrose Avenue noticed her alarming appearance and urged her to go home. Driving herself back, Lauren lost consciousness.
What followed was a series of heartbreaking events as friends and family became increasingly concerned when she failed to respond to calls and visits.
The police were summoned to her apartment for a welfare check, and they discovered her lying unresponsive on the floor. Rushed to the hospital, doctors faced a puzzling situation as she seemed unresponsive to medication.

It was only when the tampon was removed from her body that Lauren began to show signs of improvement. Placed in a medically-induced coma for 1 1/2 weeks, she bravely battled through multiple challenges, including pneumonia, kidney failure, and an alarming fever of 107 degrees.
The diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome shed light on the cause of her critical condition, but it left medical professionals astounded at her initial lack of response to treatment.
During her time in the hospital, Lauren endured multiple blood transfusions and received 80 pounds of fluids to flush out the toxins from her body. The toll on her physical well-being was immense, and she had to undergo a below-the-knee amputation on her right leg, losing the toes on her left foot.
In the face of such adversity, Lauren’s strength and resilience shone through. However, the traumatic experience had a profound impact on her mental health, presenting her with further challenges to overcome.
Later on, in December 2017, Lauren’s medical journey continued when doctors determined that her left leg would also need to be amputated, as bones were growing where her toes once were.
By January 2018, she had undergone the second amputation, facing yet another chapter in her battle to reclaim her life.
Lauren Wasser’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and perseverance. Despite the trauma she endured, she has used her experience to raise awareness about toxic shock syndrome and advocate for menstrual product safety regulations.
